More severe regulations will push even further the need for Flame Retardants. But
since consumer awareness has been focused on toxicity of chemicals, Flame Retardants
are more often targeted. This combination of challenges are therefore pushing for
even more innovations from Flame Retardants.
Halogen-free Flame Retardants have already brought a first answer to these requirements,
but they are lowering polymer properties. Furthermore they need to be added at higher
levels. Experts are now talking about combining Flame Retardants with nanofillers.
These hybrid systems allow reduced heat released during combustion, and the creation
of a protective char layer. Flame Retardancy is definitely an innovating area, and
many technical progresses are on-going.
