PVC remains the most versatile polymer, both in terms of processing techniques and
end-uses. But since consumer awareness has been focused on toxicity of chemicals,
PVC is a preferred target.
Bans of phthalate-based plasticizers have led to new plasticizers, and the entire
PVC formulation process is currently screened by chemists to track and reduce environmental
footprint of PVC, to find non-toxic ingredients, and ideally allow biodegradability
of PVC.
Overall, many environmentally friendly techniques are investigated to allow safer,
cleaner and durable PVC manufacture and use.
