Achieving Sustainability with Flame Retardants

This online Masterclass aims to deliver an understanding of the types, mechanisms, advantages and limitations of the different types of flame retardant technologies available in the light of current situations and requirements.

It will help attendees make educated choice when selecting flame retardants and avoid evaluation of inappropriate products.
5 reasons to attend this online course:
Reason 1 Understand the mechanism of different types of FRs and their advantages and limitations

Reason 2 See how the form of a material and the test method can determine the choice of flame retardant

Reason 3 Understand the relationship between flame retardants and smoke and toxic gases

Reason 4 The considerations for recycling

Reason 5 Know the questions to ask a supplier offering you an alternative flame retardant

Flame retardants are essential to meet the specifications for many products and to ensure the safety of those products or components in potential fire situations. Today there is increasing pressure from NGOs, OEMs and retailers to select flame retardants on environmental grounds.

In addition, the new EU REACH Chemical Regulations will require flame retardants, as well as the majority of other chemicals to be registered and evaluated along with their uses for health and environmental impacts. This may well lead to reformulation and the development of improved safe handling practices.

WHY SHOULD YOU ATTEND?

It will deal with general principles rather than specific substances and will address many of the common questions encountered. Following the Masterclass a participant should be able to select types of flame retardant which are likely to be effective in a specific application and feel confident in asking relevant questions to the appropriate suppliers. This should minimize resource wasted in evaluating inappropriate products.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

  • Practitioners responsible for formulating and compounding flame retardant products
  • Designers and developers of products requiring the use of flame retardant components who would benefit from understanding the underlying technology
  • OEMs and retailers of products who believe they need to understand the choices available to their suppliers
  • Anyone who has difficulty in understanding why, with literally hundreds of flame retardants being offered, the real choice can come down to only a limited number of potential alternatives.

  • Our MASTERCLASSES offers you the unique opportunity to build a foundation of knowledge in specific topics. We are pleased to be working in collaboration with SMITHERS RAPRA who will complement this Masterclass with a conference entitled 'AddCon World 2008' which will take place in Barcelona, Spain, 15-16 October 2008. The following sections will be covered during the session:

    1. Interrupting the fire process
    2. How different types of flame retardants work
    3. Matching the flame retardant type to the product composition, form and fire test specification
    4. Other properties to be considered
    5. Fire, smoke and toxic gases
    6. Halogen or non-halogen: the great debate!
    7. Exposure scenarios - important for REACH
    8. Stopping flame retardants getting into the environment
    9. Questions to ask your supplier
    David Buszard David Buszard
David Buszard is a consultant on flame retardants, fire safety and environmental issues with over 40 years experience in the industry. Prior to becoming a consultant he was Chairman of the European Flame Retardants Association (EFRA), a past chairman of the British Plastics Federation Fire Safety Committee, member of PlasticsEurope Fire Safety Committee and a number of British Standards Committees relating to fire. During his industrial experience with Ciba-Geigy, FMC, Great Lakes and Chemtura he was involved in the research, development, technical service and marketing of phosphorus, brominated and mineral flame retardants. From 2004 to 2007 Dr Buszard led the cross industry supply chain team which developed the innovative VECAP (Voluntary Emission Control Action Programme) resulting in the significant reduction of emissions of brominated flame retardants into the environment.
