This e-Training Course will provide you with a practical overview on plasticizers and their impact on final PVC compounds performance.

After setting foundations on plasticizers chemistry, the course will guide attendees into the selection of the best candidates to fit with application constraints, cost requirements, demand for phthalate-free PVC...

5 reasons to attend this online course:
Reason 1 Save time selecting the right plasticizers by timely sizing down number of candidates meeting your needs (phthalates, benzoates, EVA, TPU...)

Reason 2 Prevent more effectively failure (embrittlement, staining, stress cracking...) by understanding factors influencing service life

Reason 3 Design more cost-effective PVC compounds by learning about alternative strategies that will preserve overall performance

Reason 4 Adapt faster to non-phthalate demand by understanding what it really means and what are the formulation options

Reason 5 Get valuable insight to accelerate your own projects by benefiting from Richard Kozlowski's 40 years PVC experience

COURSE TYPE: Formulation Essentials
Ideally suited for:
1. New hires into the PVC compounding industry
2. PVC compound sales personnel who must be able to discuss the science of formulations with part designers.
3. Managers who need to understand the recommendations of the science staff.
4. PVC compound buyers and part designers who need to recognize an ability to customize a compound for their application.
5. Anyone with a need to know how PVC formulations are varied to achieve a cost/performance optimized compound.

Prerequisite: A basic knowledge of chemistry principles and plastic performance & applications is recommended to fully benefit from this course.

WHAT YOU WILL TAKE AWAY FROM THIS COURSE:
The wide range of plasticizer choices can be sometimes confusing to the part designer and compound purchaser. An understanding of formulation variables and synergies will help them sort through options.

By attending this course, participants will have a clearer understanding of:
  • What a plasticizer is and what it can do
  • What are the costs involved in improving performance
  • What will be the effect of plasticizer change on compound performance
  • What phthalate free really means and how to get there
  • ...

  • Early Registrants: Submit your specific needs when registering and let Richard Kozlowski help you find appropriate solutions.

The following sections will be covered during this session:

    1. PVC plasticization theory

    2. Strategy 1 Compounding for performance

    a. Resin and plasticizer dominant properties

      b. The plasticizer performance spectrum
c .The chemistry and structure of the commercial plasticizer families
      d. The relationship of structure to compound properties and the ability to predict performance with regression analysis
    3. Strategy 2 Compounding for cost optimization
      a. The concept of pound/volume cost
      b. Compound ingredients beyond resin and plasticizer
      c. Compound ingredient effect on total manufacturability and cost
    4. Strategy 3 Compounding for the service environment
      a. Plasticizer permanence, introducing the concept of diffusion and permanence
    5. Strategy 4 Compounding for health and safety effect (the non phthalate driver)
      a. Today’s commercial options
      b. Developing options

    6. Compounding for special performance

      a. Flame resistance, exterior performance, and microbial resistance

At the end of the training there will be a Q&A Session where you can pose questions to Richard Kozlowski. A transcript of all the questions and answers will be made available after the event.

    Richard Kozlowski Richard Kozlowski
Dick Kozlowski has been a contributing member of the plastics engineering community for nearly 45 years, 40 of which have concentrated in PVC. Throughout his career Dick has served a product, process and market development specialist and manager for both rigid and flexible PVC applications.

His experience is balanced with time spent between a PVC resin manufacturer (Diamond Shamrock), an injection molding and extrusion processor (Carlisle Engineered Products) and in the plasticizer manufacturing industry (Aristech-Sunoco). After retiring in 2005 Mr. Kozlowski formed Thermoplastic Materials and Manufacturing (TM&M) a consultancy specializing in PVC development marketing and raw material sourcing..

He is the author of numerous technical articles and papers, an adjunct instructor at the Pennsylvania College of Technology and member of the Vinyl Division of SPE Technical Program Committee.
