Q&A of the Week

Low friction materials

We are an appliance manufacturer and we need a material exhibiting very low friction. Can you advice us about a material or a combination polymer/additives?

They are already some polymers exhibiting good self-lubrification performances like Polyamide 6,6 or Polyacetal (POM). This performance can be improved by the addition of lubricant fillers like graphite or molebdium disulfide. If the color of your part is a concern there are some high molecular weight PTFE that can be used. These PTFE are also efficient in polyolefins.
