Why use Precipitated Calcium Carbonate ?
Calcium carbonate have long been recognized as useful additives for thermoplastics
and particularly in PVC for many applications. Ground calcium carbonate is generally
used as a filler with an interesting ratio performance/price.
Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC) however exhibits a much smaller particle size.
The specific structure and granulometry of PCC (see description)
allows this materials to fullfil additional functions like Processing aid,
impact modification and better weatherability.
PCC is much more than a filler
Precipitated calcium carbonate is a versatile additive for use in a wide range of
plastic and elastomeric applications. Its regular and controlled crystalline shape
and ultrafine particle size together with the hydrophobic surface coating, combine
to the benefit of both polymer processing and subsequent physical properties.
PCC is one of a unique class of additives which can be classified as being multi
functional providing the end user with an outstanding cost/performance opportunity.
The main effects of PCC in PVC are listed in the table below.
In this technical Desk we will describe PCC and
show you the main differences with ground calcium Carbonate and their benefits like processing aid, polymer
reinforcement and weatherability.
Some applications in rigid PVC and
plasticized PVC will be described shortly to show the level of performances
achievable with PCC.
