A major use for silanes has been developed in the organic rubber industry as a result of the benefits that can
be obtained from the use of inorganic filler, replacing carbon black, in the reinforcement of rubber.
Silica reinforcement of rubber provides unique physical caracteristics and performance
properties over carbon black reinforcement. However silane coupling agents are necessary for the non-black
reinforcing fillers to be effective. Silane coupling agents are the key to provide a method of effectively bonding
the inorganic fillers to organic elastomers.
Other non-black fillers, such as clay, can be used to make articles that are colors others than black.
Silane coupled, non-black rubber products are used for
automotive and off-road tires, soles, belts, hoses and mechanical goods.
